Dear Colleagues
We cordially invite you to attend the 13th
International Conference on Pharmaceutical Medicine in Geneva,
Switzerland. We are proud to host this meeting in our country for
the first time and hope to make it a memorable event scientifically,
operationally and socially. “Simply Better Medicines” was chosen as
the conference title and to remind us of our, 'raison d'être', as
specialised physicians, to contribute to the discovery and
development of new and better drugs which meet a medical need. In
recent years, we have focussed on globalisation, harmonisation, the
optimising of processes and information. We are now in a paradigm
shift into genome driven drug discovery and pharmacogenetically
segmented frontloaded and (bio-) informative drug development
because of the new wealth of genome and proteome based drug targets
and high number of small chemical and biological molecules. There is
rising pressure on “higher throughput drug development” which is
integrated and comprehensive, faster and eventually (hopefully) less
expensive. This is an almost insurmountable task, particularly in
the light of the increasing drug development deficit encountered
with more drugs being developed in the small biotech technology
industry.
The programme of the 13th ICPM Conference in
Switzerland addresses some of these issues and focuses on coping
with: the paradigm shift, new technologies including
bio-informatics, systems biology and knowledge management, as well
as simulation and modelling as they pertain to integrated drug
development and more personalised use and better medicines. Ethical
aspects which emerge from the practical use of new therapeutic
interventions, e.g. gene therapy, will also be discussed.
Striving for better medicines in integrated and
informative drug development demands better training and education
in pharmaceutical medicines and postgraduate training programmes
need to be harmonised. Specialist titles in pharmaceutical medicine
are being acknowledged in several countries and mutual
national/European recognition evolves. Collaborative efforts are
made to provide a continuing (pharmaceutical) medical education
system. A comprehensive curriculum for specialisation in
pharmaceutical medicine emerges.
We look forward to working with you at the
Geneva Conference in an atmosphere of fascination and fun.
